By Chris Youngballparkfigures@comcast.net The Yankees’ Dave Righetti completes his Independence-Day no-hitter against the Red Sox in 1983 — and your faithful correspondent was there to see it. The story that I am about to share with you is true. I alluded to the circumstances in my very first column back in early January as I introduced myself and gave a brief history of my sports background. But as time has gone by, and after being reminded on a recent podcast interview of the remarkable nature of my baseball “achievement” so long ago, I decided to do some added research to determine if what happened to me was merely a fluke, or just a remarkable confluence of incredible odds that allowed me to be able to claim a spot in MLB immortality. Er, let’s make that “history,” but since it happened to someone who was actually born in baseball’s alleged birthplace in Cooperstown, NY, this makes it all the more unbelievable. When I was 10, I was taken to my first pro game, at Shea Stadium in Queens, NY. I was getting to see my beloved NY Mets for the first time live in person, and it was my first visit to a pro stadium of any kind. Shea at the time was in just its sixth season of operation, and the Mets were in their eighth year (having played their first two seasons at the Polo Grounds in Manhattan). To make a long story short, the Mets’ opponents that day (9/20/69) — the Pirates — no-hit the home team, 4-0, behind a journeyman named Bob Moose. The no-hitter was the sixth and final one of 1969, and since there were 4,860 games played that (or any other) season, the odds of seeing a no-hitter anywhere were one in approximately 810.
